How to Stay Safe with Home Decking

14 August 2019

Many people underestimate the time it takes to build an outdoor timber decking area. If you’re working with an experienced contractor that doesn’t cut corners, you could be looking at a project that takes a number of weeks. It’s important to plan ahead to avoid inconvenience and injury.

If you live with young children or toddlers, it’s absolutely crucial that you take steps to ensure their safety. Your backyard is about to become a building site, and that is not a safe space for a child. Thankfully, there are a few simple steps you can take to help keep your family out of harm’s way.

Set Up Safety Barriers

While your deck is being built, your backyard can be extremely dangerous for the little ones in your life. To protect your kids from falls and scrapes, consider setting up safety barriers around the worksite until your hardwood decking area is complete. If you’ve got older kids, some safety tape should be enough to remind their curious minds not to explore. For younger children, you may want to consider installing some physical barriers to keep them away. While they might be slightly inconvenient, safety barriers are a great option to keep your little ones safe and happy.

Communication is Key

Once you make the decision to build hardwood decking, it’s important to let your little ones know that the backyard is off limits until construction is complete. Sit your kids down and make sure they understand why they can’t go exploring for the time being. Children are more likely to follow rules when they understand why they’re being implemented. You could even try explaining to your kids what the finished outdoor timber decking area will look like. If they know what’s going on, they will be less curious and less likely to explore.

Don’t Forget Your Pets

Your pets are part of the family too! Don’t neglect them when it comes to building your timber deck. Pets aren’t fans of change or disruption. If your pet usually spends time in the area where your future deck will be, make sure you’re prepared for some confusion or annoyance. Try encouraging them with treats and affection to hang out in a different location. Make sure your pets are out of harm’s way while your deck is in construction. The last thing you want is for your animals to get underfoot and injure themselves or others.

Lock All Doors and Windows

To keep your little ones out of the way while your hardwood deck is being built, it’s important you remember to lock your doors. Any door or window leading to your backyard must be double checked to ensure your curious little one doesn’t wander into harm’s way. If you’ve got a spare baby gate lying around, this could be the perfect thing!
